I Tested 5 AI Chatbots for My One-Person Business — The Winner Surprised Me

When you're running a business alone, customer support is a constant tension. You can't be available 24/7, but your customers expect fast responses. Miss a message on a Friday night and by Monday that lead is gone.

AI chatbots promise to fix this. Set up a bot, train it on your FAQs, and it handles the repetitive questions while you focus on actual work.

But which one? There are dozens of options, and the price difference between them is enormous — from free to nearly $1,000/month.

We tested 5 of the most popular AI chatbot platforms for 30 days each, handling real customer inquiries on a real business website. Here's what happened.

How We Tested

Each chatbot was installed on our website for 30 days. We tracked:

• Resolution rate — what percentage of inquiries did the bot handle without human intervention?
• Setup time — how long from signup to functioning chatbot?
• Quality of responses — did the bot give accurate, helpful answers?
• Cost per resolved inquiry — total monthly cost divided by resolved conversations

We fed each bot the same FAQ document (27 common questions) and let them handle real traffic.

1. Tidio — The Solopreneur's Best Friend

Price: Free plan available, Starter $29/month, Growth $59/month

Setup time: 45 minutes

Tidio surprised us. It's not the most well-known name, but for solopreneurs it's the clear winner.

The AI chatbot (called Lyro) learned our 27 FAQs in about 20 minutes. We pasted in our FAQ document, and Lyro started answering questions immediately. No coding, no complex flows, no decision trees to build.

What impressed us:

• Resolution rate: 72% — the highest of any bot we tested. Nearly three-quarters of inquiries were handled automatically.
• The AI understands variations. Someone asking "how much does it cost" and "what are your prices" and "pricing?" all get the right answer.
• When Lyro doesn't know something, it says so honestly and routes to email instead of making up answers.
• The free plan includes 50 Lyro conversations per month — enough to test if it works for your business.

What we didn't like:

• The dashboard can feel cluttered with features you don't need
• Advanced AI features require the Growth plan ($59/month)
• The branding on the free plan is noticeable

2. Crisp — The Sleek Alternative

Price: Free plan, Pro $25/month, Unlimited $95/month

Setup time: 1 hour

Crisp has the best-looking chat widget of any tool we tested. It's clean, modern, and doesn't feel like a corporate help desk stuck on your website.

What impressed us:

• Resolution rate: 58% — solid but below Tidio
• The interface is beautiful, both for you and your customers
• Built-in CRM tracks every visitor and conversation
• The free plan is generous — includes 2 chat seats and basic bot features

What we didn't like:

• The AI bot (MagicReply) is less accurate than Tidio's Lyro
• Complex questions often got generic responses
• The good AI features require the $95/month Unlimited plan

3. HubSpot Chatbot — The Free Powerhouse

Price: Free (included with HubSpot CRM)

Setup time: 30 minutes

If you're already using HubSpot CRM (which we recommend in our solopreneur AI stack), the chatbot is included free. And it's surprisingly capable.

What impressed us:

• Resolution rate: 45% — lower than dedicated chatbot tools, but it's free
• Deep integration with HubSpot CRM — every conversation is automatically logged on the contact record
• Meeting booking built right into the chat — visitors can schedule a call without leaving the conversation
• Conditional logic lets you build different flows based on visitor behavior

What we didn't like:

• The AI capabilities are basic compared to Tidio and Crisp
• You need to build conversation flows manually (no AI learning from FAQs)
• The bot can feel rigid — it follows scripts, not natural conversation
• If you're not using HubSpot CRM, this isn't worth signing up just for the chatbot

4. Intercom — The Enterprise Standard

Price: Starter $74/month, most features require $500+/month

Setup time: 2 hours

Intercom is the gold standard of customer messaging. It's used by companies like Notion, Figma, and Amazon. The product is incredible.

The price, however, makes it impossible for most solopreneurs.

What impressed us:

• Resolution rate: 68% — Fin AI agent is genuinely excellent
• The AI understands context and follow-up questions better than any competitor
• The entire platform is beautifully designed
• Proactive messaging reaches visitors before they even ask a question

What we didn't like:

• $74/month minimum, and the AI agent (Fin) costs $0.99 per resolved conversation on top of that
• Our monthly bill with moderate traffic: roughly $140/month
• Massive overkill for a one-person business
• Setup is more complex than simpler tools

5. Drift — The Sales-Focused Bot

Price: From $2,500/month (yes, really)

Setup time: 3+ hours

We tested Drift because it's a well-known name, but we can save you time: don't even consider it for a solo business. The entry price is $2,500/month. It's designed for B2B sales teams with 50+ employees.

Resolution rate: 61% — good but irrelevant at this price point.

We won't do a full review because it's so far outside the solopreneur budget that it's not worth discussing. If you have $2,500/month for a chatbot, you probably have a team and don't need this article.

The Results: Side by Side

Our Recommendation

For most solopreneurs: Tidio. Best resolution rate, reasonable price, fast setup. Start with the free plan (50 AI conversations/month) and upgrade to Starter ($29/month) when you need more volume.

If you're on HubSpot already: HubSpot Chatbot. It's free, it's integrated, and 45% resolution still saves you significant time. Add Tidio later if you need better AI.

If budget is zero: HubSpot Chatbot. Free, functional, and gets the job done for low-volume support.

Skip Intercom and Drift unless you're running a funded startup with serious revenue. They're excellent products priced for companies, not solopreneurs.

The real cost comparison that matters: Tidio at $29/month handles 72% of your support inquiries automatically. A part-time support person costs $500-1,500/month. The ROI isn't even close.
