ChatGPT's Free Tier Now Has Unlimited Text Chats
OpenAI made GPT-5.6 Luna the default for free users, removed the cap on text conversations, and added a Think button for harder questions. The weakest link in the $0 solopreneur stack just got considerably stronger.

On 6 August, OpenAI updated ChatGPT for both ends of its user base.
Free and Go users get GPT-5.6 Luna as the default model, plus unlimited text chats and a new Think button that gives the model more time to reason through harder questions. Plus and Pro users get an updated GPT-5.6 Sol with a slider controlling how much thought goes into each response.
OpenAI also published a figure worth noting: in internal evaluations on financial, medical and legal prompts requiring factual detail, responses containing at least one factual error were roughly 62% less common with Luna and 68% less common with Sol compared with GPT-5.5 Instant.
The important caveat, in OpenAI's own words: limits still apply to file uploads, images and other tools. It's unlimited text, not unlimited everything.
What it means for a solopreneur
We published our $0 solopreneur stack earlier this week, and writing was the category where the free tier felt most like a compromise. ChatGPT Free handled email drafting and brainstorming fine, but the usage caps meant a heavy writing day could stop you mid-task.
That constraint is now largely gone for text. If your free-tier use is drafting emails, outlining, summarising and rewriting — which describes most solo businesses — the practical ceiling has moved a long way up.
Two things this does not change:
File and image work still has limits. If your workflow involves feeding documents in regularly, you'll still hit walls that a paid tier removes.
"Unlimited" is a policy, not a promise. Free tiers are competitive positioning, and competitive positioning changes. Build the habit, not the dependency — the whole argument of our $0 stack piece is that free tiers break on volume rather than capability, and this is a reminder that the volume line moves in both directions.
The honest read: if you were paying $20/month for ChatGPT Plus mainly to avoid hitting the free cap on text work, it's worth a month of testing the free tier again before renewing.
