Notion Mail Shuts Down 22 September — Export by the 21st
Notion is retiring its email client and folding email into its AI agents. The export deadline is a day before the shutdown, reminders don't transfer, and anyone choosing Notion as a CRM right now is buying a product mid-rebuild.
Original announcement
Notion — Jun 25, 2026What happened
On 25 June, Notion announced it is retiring Notion Mail. The iOS, desktop and web apps all shut down on 22 September 2026 — roughly seventeen months after the product launched.
Notion's reasoning is that the inbox stopped being where the work happened. In its telling, more than half of Notion Mail users already manage email without ever opening the inbox, having handed those workflows to Notion's agents. "As Notion agents have gotten more capable, we've seen more users hand off email workflows to them," the company said, adding that it is "going all in on using agents to run your inbox."
Your actual email is safe. Notion Mail always synced two ways with Gmail, so every message you sent or received also lives in your Gmail account. Nothing there disappears.
Three things survive the shutdown: mail blocks already placed inside Notion pages keep working, agent email tools that connect through Gmail keep working, and the Gmail AI Connector continues to operate independently of the app.
The deadline is the 21st, not the 22nd
This is the part people will miss, and it's the reason we're publishing rather than linking.
The shutdown is 22 September. The last day to export anything is 21 September. If you plan around the date in the headline, you're a day late.
What you need to save before then:
- Drafts and scheduled emails
- Snippets — and note that files attached to snippets must be downloaded manually, one at a time
- Auto-label instructions
And what does not come with you, even though it feels like it should:
- Email reminders set inside Notion Mail. These do not transfer to Gmail. If you've been using them to chase clients or invoices, that entire layer vanishes on the 22nd and nothing inherits it.
- Custom inbox organisation and views. Rebuilt by hand in whatever you move to, or lost.
Export has been open since 25 June, so there's no queue and no reason to leave it.
If you're HIPAA-covered, your deadline was two months ago
Buried in Notion's own guidance and almost entirely absent from the coverage: organisations relying on HIPAA coverage were told to transition off Notion Mail by 30 June 2026 — five days after the announcement, and nearly two months before this was published.
That won't apply to most readers. It will apply to a few — therapists, health coaches, medical billing consultants, anyone whose one-person business touches protected health information. If that's you and you're still on Notion Mail, you have been outside HIPAA coverage for the product since the end of June. Worth checking today rather than in September.
What it means for a one-person business
If you were considering Notion as your CRM, this changes the calculation.
For the last stretch, Notion Mail was the answer to the strongest objection against running client relationships inside Notion — that it can't see your email. It could. That answer expires in under a month, and what replaces it is a different shape of thing: email as something agents read and draft, rather than an inbox you open.
That may end up better. But there's a gap between now and better, and if you're choosing a system this month you're choosing one mid-rebuild. We've updated both places where this affects our advice — the step-by-step Notion CRM build and the HubSpot vs Notion comparison.
Don't assume the Gmail AI Connector fills the hole. It survives the shutdown, which is true and widely repeated, and it is not an option for most solopreneurs: it requires a workspace on Notion's Business or Enterprise plan, you must be a Google admin on a paid Google Workspace plan, and it is read-only — it can search and summarise, not send.
So the honest position after 22 September: a free Notion CRM has no email integration. That was true before Notion Mail existed, and it's true again.
The wider lesson is the one we keep running into. Notion Mail was free, genuinely useful, and shipped by a company with no financial trouble — and it lasted seventeen months. A free tier can shrink, as HubSpot's contact limit did, or it can simply stop existing. Neither is a reason to avoid free tools. It's a reason to know which part of your business would stop working if one disappeared, and to keep that list short.
The honest read: if you use Notion Mail at all, spend ten minutes this week exporting your snippets and auto-labels, and write down anywhere you're relying on a Notion Mail reminder. That second one is the part that will bite silently.
